With reference to your confidential letter

of May 28th, 1931, on the subject of the effect on

Hongkong industries of the increased Chinese tariff

I am directed to inform you that the representations

of the General Committee of the Chamber have been

noted and have been forwarded to His Majesty's Minis-

ter. This Government has however little hope that

spectal treatment on the lines suggested will be ob-

tained.
